Compelling stories can empower as well as change the lives. That is precisely what journalist and writer Janice Ponce De Leon does. Working at Gulf since 2011, one of the region’s most respected publications, Janice shares her ultimate advocacy: “With every story I write, my goal is to help change the life of even just one person. That’s where I find fulfillment.”
A chief issue that Janice tackles is personal finance, savings, and eliminating debt. Standing as a testament to her efforts as a writer, one woman was able to turn her life around after reading Janice’s story on how Atty. Barney Almazar helped individuals with financial woes. The woman was eventually able to clear Dh2.7 million worth of debt with just Dh26,000 with the help of Gulf Law. The story has since been published on Gulf News.
Another one of Janice’s most notable projects was covering the launch of the first Emirati astronaut to the International Space Station – following the the journey from UAE Astronaut Programme announcement in December 2017 to Hazzaa Al Mansoori’s launch on September 25 until his return on October 3, 2019. She and the other journalists followed the beat during their final pre-qualification exams in Moscow and during the launch at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
“Being the only Filipino in the group of journos covering Hazzaa, I felt proud that I was given that opportunity to see a national dream being realized in just 40 years,” she says. “I personally hope we could have the same thing in the Philippines.”
