  • Filipina Artist in Dubai: Romina May – Artist Spotlight

Filipina Artist in Dubai: Romina May – Artist Spotlight

My name is Romina May, and I am a visual artist known for vibrant life-size abstracts and hyper-realistic paintings.  I am mainly self-taught and this has shaped my entire approach to making art. I was born and raised in the northern region of the Philippines. I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 2008. I moved to Dubai to pursue my career and progressively transitioned in another interesting field that led me to my real passion in life. These defining factors influence and inspired me in my art. With the choice of subjects, and style, I think that reflects my character that I developed from where I came from and where I live now.

How did you become passionate about art? What inspires you? What is the philosophy behind it?

I’ve been drawing since I was in grade school, and through many years, I developed a passion through constant practice. I believe art is the journey of a free soul, learning how to listen and become true to oneself. With my art, I want to inspire generations, and I aim to create a connection between audience and artist by putting my values and relationship with society and the environment into my art.

What makes your art unique from the rest? Are there any defining characteristics? Or is there a definitive approach to your work that you’ve made your own?

My paintings are simply adventures of my mind. Whenever I pick up the brush and paint, I give myself fully and become a part of the creation process. It is a way of recording my thoughts, emotions, adventurous spirit, and my imagination – so that it connects with other people. I believe working in different styles is beneficial as it aids in me developing my unique style. Much of my technique is based on splashes, and it can be seen on my works entitled “Take me to Mars” and “Natural eruption” – which experiment with themes of life, space, and exploration.

Have you had any significant events through your artistic career? Exhibitions, showcases, etc.

The year 2020 was the biggest breakthrough for me in all aspects. There have been many realizations that led me back to my true passion – which is art. I found my ‘ikigai’ just at the right moment then. I knew it has always been what I wanted to do for so many years but I was disheartened by so much excuses and limited thinking.

When I showcased my works to hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors at my first public art exhibition in October 2020 at the Dubai World Trade Center, my doors were opened to many possibilities that continue even to today.

What can you say about the art community in your country? What are the good parts and the bad parts (if any)?

The art community in the Philippines where I was from, and the UAE’s community are totally different in many good ways. My approach to art has transformed dramatically as I stepped into a world of modernity and diverse cultures. Way back home, I learned how to cultivate the classic styles of realism and appreciate landscapes in nature. When I moved here to Dubai, the environment changed the way I approached art because of how my life expanded. This was when I shifted to abstract paintings, where I feel more free and less constrained. I think the place is good for emerging artists as the experience parallels to the city’s art market that is consistently booming.

What are some of the challenges that you face as an artist? How do you get past them?

Being out in the market is one of the challenges that I currently experience. I think getting to know people who are in the field is essential, and maintaining good relationships has a long-term impact as well.

Do you see any future for artists such as yourself? Is art essential to the development of your community?

Creating something beautiful for the community is essential as it uplifts the wellbeing of the people as well as it encourages activities where everyone can grow, share, and enjoy. It is a place where I see myself progressing as an individual and helping to others do the same.

What’s your message to artists around the world specially during this challenging time?

“Keep art alive” – that’s my mantra. When we have the courage to show the world what we can be without limitations, it is when we become warriors of light. I quote M. Williamson – “We are all meant to shine as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And, as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others the permission to do the same. As we liberate from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Always bear in mind that it is not about the perfection, but the progress that we make every time we give ourselves the chance to share our talents with everyone around us.

  • Filipino in Madrid: Jay Juan – My Pinoy Life in Spain

Filipino in Madrid: Jay Juan – My Pinoy Life in Spain

My name is Jay Juan and I live in Madrid, Spain

Follow Jay on Facebook and Instagram

Since when have you been staying there?  Can you recount why and how you moved there?

I’ve been here for at least 15-16 years. My parents were here long before. Of course, as a parent, you’d want your child to have a better future and better life than what you had before. That’s why they took us from Philippines to be with them.

Tell us about where you live. What is the place famous for? Are there any notable landmarks, sites, etc. What do you like and not like about living there?

Madrid is one of a kind, very easy to go around. It’s a beautiful, crowded, busy city that’s affordable to travel to compared to other European cities and countries. I like Spain in general because it has everything I want – beautiful beaches in the summer, spectacular mountains in the winter and delicious foods all year.

Tell us about your life there.  What do you do for a living?  What do you do for relaxation?  Describe a typical week. What’s the typical lifestyle over there?

I work as a barman in the restaurant industry, but I also do photography and videography on the side. People love to party here every weekend, but it’s not my thing. I do snowboarding in the winter though! That’s where I get to relax the most.

Is there a Filipino community there?

Yes! A big one, actually. There’s a place where almost 60-70% of Filipinos in the city live. I personally call it Pinoy Town (It’s around somewhere Cuatro Caminos and Tetuan).

What are the main cultural differences between there and the Philippines?

In Spain, we eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner late. A normal lunch time here is around 2:00-2:30pm and a normal dinner time is around 9:00-10:00pm. Also, people here love eating with a glass of wine or beer on the side. And once the stomach’s full, there’s one thing you SHOULD NOT DO. Do not burp!

How were you able to adjust to the culture? Did you pick up anything new (practices, life lessons, etc). Do you still observe Filipino customs and traditions?

Adjusting was a little hard to get used to at first, especially when it came to food. We Filipinos love eating rice with delicious ulam like Adobo, Kare Kare, Sisig, you name it. But sometimes we don’t have time to cook or prepare, so we usually end up buying Jamon Gazpacho, Ensaladas, or even better, Bocadillos (of course with a glass of wine). There’s lots of Filipino restaurants here by the way, but unfortunately, we live far from them.

What advice would you give to Filipinos who want to move there? Give at least 3 tips.

    1. Learn basic Spanish at least.
    2. Find a good group of people/community where you belong or be welcomed. (Filipino churches are a good choice. I recommend visiting Vidapasionada)
    3. Public transportation in Madrid is better. It’s cheaper, and easier to get around than driving with a car.

How about Filipinos who want to travel there? Also give 3 tips.

    1. You can get around Madrid by foot, especially in the center of the city. All the Landmarks are nearby.
    2. If you want to try Spanish food, go for a place where they only serve tapas so you can taste more dishes in smaller portions.
    3. Avoid taxis because they’re expensive. Use public transportation (metro or bus). If not, then download the Uber or Cabify app (which is still cheaper).

What’s your message to Filipinos across the world?

Fellow countrymen, wherever you are, know this, Filipinos are the best! Basta Filipino, magagaling at matatalino, Kahit saan mapunta, taas noo kahit kanino. Mabuhay tayong lahat!

  • Filipino Professional: Mau Piodena – Filipino HMUA in Dubai

Filipino Professional: Mau Piodena – Filipino HMUA in Dubai

Tell us about yourself. Who are you, what do you do, and some general info (how long you’ve been in the country, where you came from originally, etc.)?

I am Mau Piodena, Ilonggo but born and raised in Mandaluyong City. I have been living and working in Dubai for 7 years (3 yrs full time as hair and make up artist). I used to work as a Business Analyst at a telephone company for 2 years and lastly before doing fulltime MUA, I was a logistics officer, handling and clearing local and international shipments.

    Follow Mau on Instagram @maupiodena25

Tell us more about your job. What does it entail?

I’ve been working as a full-time freelance hair and make up artist for magazine, ad campaigns, movies, music videos, personal events, e-commerce, and local and international fashion shows. I’ve worked with labels like Chanel, YSL and Hermes to name a few, collaborated with artists, stylists and different production houses that create projects that get to billboards, print and digital media.

What’s a day in your life like? Please describe what you do on a typical working day.

On a busy day, I get up early to travel to different shoot locations. We prepare, sanitize and disinfect our equipment too. Upon arriving on set, we set up a makeup station with ring lights and chairs for the models, then we discuss with the project heads on how to achieve their goals. We then prep the model according to the looks needed, from hair to lip color and makeup changes as the shoot goes forward. After that’s done, we stay for the shoot to make sure the model looks best.

What are some of your career highlights? Anecdotes or memorable achievements you’d like to share.

Being able to see our works on billboards and magazines, being featured in local and international fashion shows and working with luxury brands are huge achievements for me. Among my greatest achievements, I flew to Milan and Paris Fashion week for Michael Cinco. I was also awarded by Xpat Insider as one of their Inspirational stories for migrant workers, and just recently awarded by TAG 91.1 as Favorite Pinoy Beauty Expert. I was also able to secure an accreditation in Paris France as MUA.

Are there any perks in your field/company?

One of the things that I get to experience, apart from getting discounted make up products, is that I get to travel, visit 5 star places and meet amazing people. There are shows that also give us products that surely would cost and arm and a leg. Also, features on TV, magazines and social media platforms that help us grow career wise.

What do you do to unwind and de-stress?

I’m a coffee lover and it’s something that I reward myself with to destress, so on a free day, I would check out Instagram-worthy coffee shops. I also like to go out of town and visit outdoorsy places like beaches. At times, I go to a spa and get a massage, and I even go SHOPPING!

What advice can you give to people in the field out there? Have you learned anything from your time as a career person? Do include a bit of your personal story if need be.

I bet in any industry, there will always be struggles and difficulties. I was once discriminated against and I even questioned myself if I could do it, not having any experience in the fashion industry since most of my jobs were weddings. Along the way we would meet different people with different point of views and perceptions of us. But one thing I’ve learned is that their words of doubts and actions of discrimination should never stop us from living our dreams. It’s rather a motivation for us to better ourselves and become more competent in this face-paced and challenging industry. As a make up artist, never be afraid of trying new things as long as it is within the looks being asked from us. Feel free to express your creativity and know your worth.

What’s your ultimate goal as a career person? What do you hope for in your career future?

It has always been my dream to work in Hollywood. I am soon taking a short course in London for special effects and with this I know I will be fewer steps away from it. As a makeup artist, my long-term goal is to put up my own brand and have my own make up school. I am learning from every project, so that in one way or another, I would be able to carry everything with me and share it with people when the right time comes.

Your message as a Filipino to all the kababayans across the globe.

We Filipinos are known for being hospitable and caring, but one thing I have learned during the Pandemic is that we Filipinos are Resilient. We always surpass expectations and survive situations with a smile on our faces.

Keep spreading this energy and outlook in life. We mirror positivity and creativity. Never give up on your dreams. You already have done it!

  • Lito German – Filipino Entrepreneur

    Lito German – Filipino Entrepreneur

Introduce yourself. Tell us about yourself, what you do, and your business.

I’m Lito German, CEO of SandBox Middle East. I was born, raised, and educated in the Philippines, but since then, my career has taken me all over the world and I’ve been working overseas for over 15 years.

I’m heading SandBox Middle East, the largest Filipino-owned import marketing and distribution company in the GCC. We are the authorized distributors of globally recognized brands such as Delimondo, Arce Dairy, B Coffee, La Lola, Veega (from San Miguel Foods), Lola Remedios, and more.

At the same time, we are the marketing and distribution partner of PLDT Global Corporation for its bills payment and mobile top up services, which we’ve established as BayaDIRECT.

As an entrepreneur, please explain what your business is about (what you provide, how you do it or how it works).

We have two business pillars namely, (1) food importation and distribution and (2) Bills Payment and Mobile Top-ups.

On the food distribution side, our business model is quite simple. We secure the rights to distribute brands that have potential in the Middle East region, then we invest heavily in creating awareness and appreciation for these products while wholesaling them across various channels.

With BayaDIRECT on the other hand, we offer Filipinos in the UAE the opportunity to pay for their Philippine based bills, top up their Philippine mobile subscriptions, or even purchase gift vouchers for their loved ones back home – conveniently over the counter at their nearest Filipino supermarket across the Emirates.

What was the goal you have for your business? Did you see a need in the market to be addressed? Or was it a labor of love? What problem do you intend to solve?

Our first goal is to expand the range of Philippine-made products available in the Middle East. When I first arrived in the region, I was surprised by the limited options Filipino expats had to choose from among Philippine brands and products. I was even more shocked to learn that majority of the Philippine products in the Middle East were being distributed by non-Filipinos. It seemed that most of these traders only viewed our products as commodities to be sold, with no regard to brand building.

Our second goal is to expand the customer profile for our products. Philippine-made products are not for Filipinos only. We have world class, premium products that all nationalities can enjoy.

And finally, our third goal is to empower Filipino expats – not only with products that give them an authentic taste of the Philippines, but also with services that connect them directly to their families back home.

What is a typical day in your life like as an entrepreneur?

Majority of my job revolves around people – making certain that my team has the right resources to allow them to excel at what they do, connecting with business partners to align, and most importantly, coming up with ways to serve our customers better. The rest of my time is spent on strategy – to keep our business on track for growth.

Each day passes by rather quickly. I try to have less meetings and more casual conversations and interactions. And I make sure that I have enough quiet time to think and strategize.

What makes entrepreneur life different from that of an employee? What do you do differently and what sacrifices/compromises did you have to make?

The main differences between an entrepreneur and employee revolve around Culture, Responsibility and Separation. First, the culture of an organization is determined foremost by the business owner. Second, as an entrepreneur, one is responsible not only for one’s employees, but their families and loved ones as well.  And finally, it’s more difficult for an entrepreneur to separate himself or herself from the office, as the work-life line gets blurred completely.

Do you have any interesting anecdotes as an entrepreneur? Any memorable moments?

There are far too many to recall. There was that time we danced and sang around the office when we landed a huge contract, as well as the time we launched a product in front of thousands of people. There was the time we were all so frustrated when our warehouses were near empty due to shipping delays, and equally the time we were afraid when our stocks arrived, and our shelves were full.

What are some of the learnings you’ve had as an entrepreneur? What advice and wisdom can you share?

I suppose it’s all about ‘give and take’.

    • Give credit and take the blame. After all, the buck stops with you as the owner.
      • Give courage and take risks. Inspire confidence, even though you’re shaking inside.
      • Give comfort and take the hits. The journey is never easy, and an entrepreneur should act as a shock absorber on bumpy roads.

What are some of the things you do to manage being an entrepreneur? Do you rest, unwind, pursue a side hustle, etc. What keeps you motivated and moving forward?

I enjoy what I do. This is already such a blessing. As such, motivation, passion, and dedication all come naturally.

I insist on unwinding – and Ditas, my endlessly energetic wife, ensures that I’m always jumping, diving, kicking, racing, swimming etc. She adds the ‘ing’ to my life.

What advice can you give to Filipinos looking to become entrepreneurs abroad?

Make sure this is the life you want. It’s not easy, but the rewards can be awesome to behold if you do it right.

What’s your hope for Filipinos as a business owner moving forward?

We need more Filipinos establishing and running businesses globally. The facets that make Filipinos the most wanted employees across the world would also make them great business owners as well.

It’s What I Do: Franco Apelo – Dubai Filmmaker

Tell us about yourself. Who are you, what do you do, and some general info (how long you’ve been in the country, where you came from originally, etc.)?

Im Franco, a healthcare provider (nurse) turned freelance filmmaker and photographer here in UAE. I specialize in weddings, fashion, events, commercials, and creating social media content.

I have always been passionate in capturing the priceless moments of others and expressing them in a creative way. Filmmaking and photography have been my passion ever since I was in college. I started making wedding films and taking photographs back in the Philippines, then I started working in the UAE as a nurse and eventually ventured into freelancing as a filmmaker and photographer. I have been working here for 5 years now and I am humbled to have worked with a lot of prominent people and big companies not only here in UAE, but also in different parts of the world.

    Follow Franco on Instagram @francoapelo

View more of his works on www.francoapelo.co

Tell us more about your job. What does it entail?

Photos and videos have the power to tell unique stories, especially when social media is already part of our everyday life. Being a filmmaker and a photographer is never easy. It involves a lot experience, skills (composition, editing, etc.), technical knowledge (camera, lights, storyboards, etc.) and sometimes even sleepless nights. I have around 10 years of experience in the field, but I still believe I’m at the learning stage. Creativity is a never-ending process of growing and learning.

As a wedding filmmaker and photographer, capturing priceless emotions of people and sharing the stories behind those smiles, hugs and tears, is one of my inspirations that keeps me going. In weddings, you will feel the atmosphere of love of the couple and strong emotions of people.

As a commercial filmmaker and photographer, I believe that every brand or company has a story to tell, and behind them are enthusiastic business owners with dreams and aspirations. I am inspired to work with them, not only to share their story, but to creatively make the world feel what they feel too.

What’s a day in your life like? Please describe what you do on a typical working day.

As a freelancer, I have a flexible schedule. Normally I would shoot for 2-3 days a week, then have the rest for editing, but I also add in time for meetings, ocular visits and even personal marketing.

Typically on preparation days, I would spend time meeting with clients and planning the details of upcoming shoot. Also at this time, I’m also preparing equipment.

One of my rituals before every shoot is to pray. I ask for the guidance and clear mind so that I would be able to execute the plans properly and be able to bring out the best out of the shoot. After the shooting is the post-production. I usually spend most of my time doing revisions until the final output is approved.

What are some of your career highlights? Anecdotes or memorable achievements you’d like to share.

In 2017, I was on The Filipino Times’ “Through the Lens” as a featured photographer. I also won my 1st videography award at the UAE World Beauty Championship.

In 2019, I won the Nikon #VolleyWithZ6 Video Competition. Also in the same year, I was able to conduct my 1st Wedding Photography and Videography Workshop entitled The Art of “I Do” at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). In the same year, I also had my 1st local radio interview with Tag 91.1 in the segment, “Learning with the Pros”.

My latest award was from UAE Bridal Makeup & Bedazzled Awards 2021 as Best Fashion Videographer.

I am also humbled to have worked brands like Illustrado, Arab Film Studios, Image Nation Abu Dhabi, Doha Film Institute and many more. I have also worked with Michael Cinco, Amato, Ezra Couture, Angelo Estera and more fashion designers. I am also making videos for Embassy of the Philippines in the UAE.

Are there any perks in your field/company?

Since creating videos and taking photos is my passion, the first and main perk of my job is that it is therapeutic. There is nothing better than doing what you are passionate about and being able to share that talent  with others.

Also since I’m a freelancer, I get the benefit to be my own boss. I get to choose my own timings and work in a stress-free environment.

Also when you are an experienced filmmaker and photographer, people will be willing to pay for you even if it means traveling to other countries to shoot. I am grateful to have travelled to Qatar, Saudi, Singapore, and Thailand to work with my clients. Other perks can include free entrance tickets to events, backstage passes, free hotel stays and being able to meet famous personalities in person during shoots.

What do you do to unwind and de-stress?

I usually unwind by exercising, biking, playing sports, games and traveling. I also love creating landscape and travel photos and videos.

What advice can you give to people in the field out there? Have you learned anything from your time as a career person? Do include a bit of your personal story if need be.

Based on my experience, my advice for aspiring filmmakers and photographers would be:

    1. Focus and discipline are key.
    2. You will come across difficulties, but that’s just normal and it’s part of the process.
    3. You will meet a lot of people, and in each person, you meet, may it be bad or good, you will always learn something.
    4. You will have good and bad experiences, especially with some clients. But don’t let these things stop you. Cherish the good experiences and learn from the bad.
    5. Lastly, just keep doing what you love. Just keep going, keep growing.

What’s your ultimate goal as a career person? What do you hope for in your career future?

My ultimate goal would be is to be able to inspire others and share my experiences with them. I still have a lot to learn before I reach that level, so I believe I still need to keep on learning and grow more.

Your message as a Filipino to all the kababayans across the globe.

To my fellow kababayans across the globe, always trust the process and never give up on your dreams.
