Filipino Business Leaders Share their Experiences at Philx Thought Leadership Forum

Dubai, UAE. SandBox Middle East, the largest Filipino owned importer and distributor of food and grocery items in the GCC region, recently organized a Thought Leadership Forum in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai.

The forum, entitled PHILx, featured a stellar list of speakers including Giordano Middle East CEO and Managing Director Ishwar Chugani, Owner of Kubyertos Cuisine and Kiesha Beauty Lounge Gina Valbuena, and International Fashion Icon and Designer Ezra Santos.

Philippine Consul General Paul Cortes opened the program by welcoming the multinational set of guests, many of whom were there at the Philippine Consulate in Dubai for the first time. Cortes shared some of the projects that he undertook in service of the Filipino business community and expressed his hopes that the initiatives would continue long after his official term of service in the UAE ends. It was previously announced that the Consul General has been recently promoted as Assistant Secretary for Migrant Workers and would be returning to Manila in November.

SandBox Middle East CEO Lito German then delivered his keynote address, which included his personal experience moving from the automotive industry to the import and distribution business. German questioned why he was often the first Filipino in the boardrooms of the multinational companies he worked for and challenged other businessmen who have climbed the corporate ladder to help other Filipinos follow their path.

Gina Valbuena, on the other hand, shared her inspiring journey from employee to entrepreneur, while Ishwar Chugani shared some tips on how to cultivate a people-focused corporate culture. Ezra Santos told the story of his transformation and growth from being an artist and designer to being a well-rounded business owner.

One of the highlights of the event was a touching tribute to Consul General Paul Cortes, in acknowledgement of his countless achievements as Head of the Philippine mission in Dubai and the neighbouring Northern Emirates for the past six years. The tribute was organized by the management board of SandBox Middle East led by CEO Lito German and COO Mark Mauricio.

Entertainment for the evening was performed by the Filipina diva and songstress, Shanice Michaels, who regaled the audience with jazz hits, as well as an impactful and memorable rendition of the Philippine National Anthem.

The event was well attended by an international group of businessmen from various industries such as Retail, Manufacturing, Finance, and F&B. It likewise aligned with the aims of the Expo 2020 in Dubai to increase foreign investments into the UAE and spur further economic growth in the region.

World expos have forever been championing culture, innovation, and human ingenuity of all forms from all over. During these landmark events that only happen once every five years, countries gather to showcase their successes and game-changing ideas that rewrite history and foretell the future’s promise all at the same time. With Dubai Expo 2020 fast approaching, the Philippines is set to shine and elevate the collective image of its people in the global arena to end all global arenas – utilizing its landmark participation to tell a progressive yet unmistakably authentic narrative of our nation.

    DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez

Spearheading this milestone initiative is the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) under the leadership of Secretary Ramon Lopez (Chairman and Commissioner-General of the Philippine Organizing Committee), together with Assistant Secretary Rosvi Gaetos, Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Hijayceelyn Quintana, Architect Royal Pineda, and Curator Marian Pastor Roces.

Through participating at the expo, the team endeavors to highlight the Philippines’ best in terms of trade, tourism, and investment, as well as other facets that showcase the nation for what it is – a creative and compassionate changemaker with a burgeoning economy that is ready for business. Secretary Lopez shares: “With our participation, we hope to create more goodwill for the Philippines and to attract greater interest not only for our products but also investments, as well as our tourist destinations.” He adds, “Alongside forging relationships with potential investors and trade partners, it’s an opportunity to project the Philippines as a progressive and innovative nation – that is also rich in culture and heritage – of concerned and professionally active individuals that are connected worldwide.”

    Assistant Secretary Rosvi Gaetos

Asec Gaetos remarks, “The goal of our participation is 3-fold: country branding, trade tourism and investments, and consumer engagement.” She also adds that the participation is largely a branding exercise that empowers Filipinos to tell their own story – and not anyone else’s.  She affirms, “It’s a story, a narrative of what and who the Filipino is, and it’s something that is supposed to elevate and change mindsets not only on how Filipinos look at themselves, but also likewise how the whole world will look upon Filipinos.”

Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Hjayceelyn Quintana

With over 700,000 Filipinos in the UAE, Ambassador Quintana expresses that OFs will play an instrumental role in shaping the Philippines’ run during the 6-month event, “The Filipino community here can play a very supportive role even if everything is prepared already by the Philippine organizing committee.  There are other things that we can do to reinforce the message to elaborate on whatever could be done to highlight the many things that are going to be presented and projected during the expo.“  She continues, “This is our chance to shine; this is a global stage that we are going to have. I hope that we will be ready for that.”

    Architect Royal Pineda

Architect Royal Pineda who designed the Philippine pavilion called “Bangkota” based on the coral reefs, shares the idea behind the most awaited structure. “The very essence of what we are doing is to reflect the real nature of the Philippines – our people being warm, sensitive, and caring.  We go the extra mile, and we are very soulful. That is what we are presenting and amplifying in this pavilion. We intend to showcase the beauty of our islands, our materials, our skills, and, most of all, our people. It is about collaborations – modern bayanihan, to show the world that we have something to offer – our gift to the world. And this, I believe, is important to find the identity, dignity, and honor of Filipinos.”

    Curator Marian Pastor Roces

Curator Marian Pastor-Roces is excited to offer a new story of the Philippines through the pavilion – “That Filipinos are not just a product of that 500 years of history that we know of right now. That the Filipino has been in the making for thousands of years.”  She adds, “Most people do not know the story of our emergence into today. They will see a totally interconnected people, and this is an excellent platform for Filipinos because the whole expo is actually about connectivity. And we obviously are among the most connected, if not the most connected   people on earth.”

The image of the Philippines as a growing global force to be reckoned with, coupled with deep roots and a caring and connected people, is set to be highlighted at the forthcoming event, which is slated to be the ‘World’s, Greatest Show.’  With the leadership of the DTI at the Expo 2020 in Dubai, the community and the country is set not only to seize opportunities on many fronts, but it is also set to take another step towards its progressively evolving narrative.

    Creative Director

Creative Director, respected advertising legend Ramon Benitez, has contributed greatly to the sterling reputation of Filipinos as formidable creative talents in the advertising industry.  Working in the region for over 20 years, Mon has been the man behind some of Leo Burnett’s campaigns for its biggest clients – multinational giants Philip Morris, Diageo, and Procter & Gamble, among others. He has garnered over 10 Gold and 2 Silver honors at the International Advertising Association (IAA) Middle East Awards.  A number of his campaigns, particularly for Marlboro, Parliament, and Merit, have also been adopted on a global scale.

Always the self-effacing talent who never takes credit for all the work alone, Mon sees every win as the success of team effort.  Having a squad of over 20 composed of art directors, copywriters, and other designers, during his Leo Burnett stint, his creative genius and mastery in the field has been instrumental in pushing Filipino leadership in the sector.

Now running his own agency Illustrado-CREO since 2013, to pursue his own interests, Ramon emphasizes the importance of going beyond just great work.  He shares, “I use to think that good creative work will always speak for itself. I was wrong. We need to push our ideas and defend them when necessary. You have to present yourself and be visible because being good is just not enough. Prioritizing work that delivers business and awards are just icing on the cake.  At the end of the day, we all need to go beyond thinking like creatives. We should also think about the business as a whole.”

Launching his avant garde atelier ‘Amato’ in Dubai in 2002, the designer brought something distinctively contemporary to the regional couture scene – something unexpected, bold, edgy, future forward, romantic and sometimes even bizarre – but all at once very beautiful and exciting.  His creations have become coveted by the region’s elite, his dramatic shows have turned out into the most in-demand tickets during fashion season, and A-listers from all over the globe, too many to mention, have worn his pieces.  He has showcased his art around across the globe in runways, events and collaborations from the UK, Australia, Germany, to the USA. Chef John Buenaventura is the veritable role model for Filipinos who want to break out in the culinary world – skillful, competitive, charismatic, and ballsy.

Undeterred by setbacks when he first launched his own entrepreneurial venture – Cuisinero Uno some years back, he continues to be ‘the’ culinary personality who has captured the attention of the mainstream foodie audiences, as well as the media.  Chef John has been part of the pre-opening team of prestigious international brand Waldorf Astoria at the Dubai International Financial Center.  Currently, he is the Cluster Executive Chef for the Hilton Group – Al Seef Hotels. He has also been featured in Flava Monteiro’s “Legacy” book as one of the finest chefs in the region, while also being awarded as one of the brand ambassadors of “Chef’s Roll” USA, all while maintaining his title as the youngest cluster chef in the EMEA region.

As one of the few Filipino chefs representing his country on a global front, Chef John remarks, “My main objective and advocacy is to inspire Filipinos, specifically chefs to look out of the box and compete globally. Take risks, fail, learn, stand up and keep trying until you reach a certain level that you do not have to introduce yourself when you enter a room full of different professionals from different parts of the world.”

Dawn Almario – Illustrado 300 Most Influential Filipinos in the Gulf

“We all are a work in progress. I believe one is never done in their life work; we are continuously contributing, continuously creating, and continuously changing.”

Creative Director Dawn Almario has always strived to push creative boundaries through her endeavors in the field of advertising, as well as through her other artistic pursuits. She has worked for internationally renowned advertising agencies in the world, including McCann Erickson (Manila), Impact BBDO (Dubai), Grey Global Group (Dubai), and FCB (Dubai), creating campaigns for some of the most well-loved brands.  A multi-awarded artist, she has received honors from the New York Ad Festival, London International Awards (LIA), Cannes Lions, and Clio.

With her appetite for continued growth, Dawn plans to pivot from advertising and reinvent herself in the world of fine arts, hoping to create works that have a lasting impact, longer than that of advertising campaigns. She also hopes to see more Filipino talents in creative industries in general, expressing that this can be achieved through immersing oneself in different cultures: “In general, I think Filipinos should make it a point to travel the world. One can start to be open through observation and first-hand experiences of world culture. If we keep on seeing and feeling the same things, we will never grow as a country or as people. Immersion and exposure to new ideas, I think, is the start of change and, therefore progress.”
